From lush lawns to thriving plants, Caledonian Horticulture helps you grow a garden to be proud of.

Caledonian Horticulture produces a wide range of sustainable, peat-free horticultural products and wood fuels across the south of Scotland. From small garden bags and builders’ bags to bulk lorry loads for agriculture and land remediation, our products are available directly to the public or delivered across the Central Belt, Fife, Perth, Dundee, Ayrshire, and the Scottish Borders. Alongside our compost and soil improvers, we also supply sustainably harvested, kiln-dried logs, kindling, and pizza oven wood from our purpose-built drying kiln.

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. By recycling and repurposing all waste brought to our sites, we contribute to the circular economy and divert valuable resources from landfill. Our commitment to quality and innovation has been recognised nationally, with awards from the Association of Organics Recycling and the British Renewable Energy Association.

Established in 2002

What began as a simple college project for our founder, Tommy Dale, has grown into a mission that continues to shape Caledonian Horticulture today. Back then, garden cuttings from councils and landscapers were either sent to landfill or burned on bonfires – wasting a valuable natural resource. Tommy saw an opportunity to do things differently: to turn that waste into something life-giving.

In 2002, he opened our very first composting site at East Fenton near North Berwick. From those early days, the vision has blossomed. Today, we operate 12 sites across the Lothians, Edinburgh, Central Scotland, and the Borders, working with local councils to transform green waste into high-quality compost.
Over time, our product range has grown too – from compost to topsoil, sand mixes, and biomass fuels – but the heart of our story remains the same: giving back to the earth by making the most of what it provides.

Our One Planet Pledge

We care deeply about the world we live in and are committed to being a business with a positive environmental and social impact. We are taking steps across all areas of our business to reduce our carbon footprint.
Fuel Offsetting – We contribute 2p per litre of diesel used by our vehicles and machinery towards environmental restoration and carbon reduction projects
Tree Planting – We donate a tree for every bulk bag of firewood sold
Community Compost Scheme – We offer compost to schools and community groups across the central belt to encourage everybody to try growing their own
