Caledonian Horticulture were proud to sponsor the third annual Big Beach Clean run by The Scottish Coastal Clean Up. This year we sent a team from our newly opened Ayr site to clean up a beach south of Ayr.
Big Beach Clean
The Scottish Coastal Clean Up asked groups from across Scotland to help them celebrate World Ocean day by completing a beach clean. Over 36 groups took part resulting in a huge amount of litter being removed from our coastline. This was the first year groups on the west coast and Scottish Islands took part in the event.
Litter Removal
When we first arrived at the pebbly beach we didn’t think it looked to bad. However, once we got started we quickly realised there was a huge amount of litter on the beach. We found most of it at the high tide line and in the grassy area between the beach and road. The main items found where:
- Drink bottles
- Cans
- Lots and lots of rope!
- Lobster creels
- Tyres
- Plastic fuel containers
At the end of 4 hours we were amazed to find that we had collected 12m3 of rubbish from the beach.
Pick Up 5
The Scottish Coastal Clean Up are trying to promote PICK UP 5 – everytime you go for a walk or visit a beach see if you can challenge yourself to pick up 5 pieces of litter. If everybody did this it would have a huge impact on the levels of plastic found on our coast.
